Background of the Study
The Yoruba language, with a long literary and cultural history, underwent significant standardization influenced by historical education systems. During the 19th and early 20th centuries, missionary schools played a pivotal role in developing a standardized orthography for Yoruba through the translation of religious texts and the establishment of written curricula (Adejumo, 2023). This formal education system not only promoted literacy among Yoruba speakers but also helped unify diverse dialects under a common standard. Subsequent colonial and post-colonial educational reforms further cemented the standardized form of Yoruba, influencing language use in media, government, and academia (Ogunleye, 2024). However, standardization processes have sometimes marginalized regional variations and traditional usages. Recent studies indicate that while standardized Yoruba has fostered broader communication, it has also led to tensions between prescriptive norms and indigenous linguistic practices (Adebola, 2025). This study examines the role of historical education systems in shaping Yoruba standardization and assesses its long-term effects on language identity and usage.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the recognized role of education in standardizing Yoruba, there is limited research on how historical education systems shaped its development. The impact of missionary and colonial educational policies on Yoruba has not been thoroughly analyzed, leaving gaps in our understanding of the tensions between standardized language forms and regional dialects (Adejumo, 2023). This lack of detailed study hinders efforts to reconcile traditional usages with modern educational practices, thereby affecting language policy and cultural identity.
